Strange, yet adorably full of life, personified small animals appear in Ishizuka Takanori’s wooden sculptures. His inspiration comes mainly from his personal interest in Japanese history, in particular in the country’s mythology, ethnology, and in its caricature and color print tradition.
Title of the exhibition, “Hiten” refers to the celestial maidens who, according to Buddhism, protect Buddha in heaven. Personification of these celestial beings, Ishizuka’s animals shape a unique world flying across+D31 sky and earth as well as past and present. The exhibition presents the artist’s most recent works including a large-scale sculpture.
