Masuda Hikari: And Yet...

2026.3.13 [Fri] - 3.29 [Sun]

Bear-themed tableware and ornaments, animal-painted vessels, Kokeshi Doll sake bottles, Daruma sake cups, and more.
Ceramic artist Masuda Hikari has created a wide variety of pieces with her free-flowing imagination and unwavering sculptural ability. Her free-spirited, unconventional designs gently stir our emotions and bring forth reactions of surprise and delight.
The theme of this exhibition is “And Yet…”
How does Masuda take and modify the nuances contained in words—the margins of uncertainty, the innermost truths, the various contradictions and fluctuations—into the forms she creates where beneath the playfulness and humor a layer of delicate emotion is laid bare. Come and see for yourself!

Last year I went to the Glastonbury Festival in England. The live music performances were center stage of course, but what I also found very impressive were the large number of exhibits in that massive venue that sought to raise awareness of environmental and human rights issues. Another aspect of Glastonbury is all the people who, in addition to coming for the music, also wave a wide variety of handmade flags, each displaying the personal message they want to convey, including things like “Cheese is the best!”.
I often feel that I want to raise my own voice and shout out what I am thinking at that moment. As an adult, however, I know it may shock the people around me, and I’m worried that if my inner thoughts were rejected, further conversation may no longer be possible. So instead, I mostly live my life keeping these things hidden. But I really would like to be able to write what I think on a flag and proudly raise it for all to see, and I’m thinking I might just start with something about cheese.
