Ishikawa Masumi and Suzuki Hyottoko: COLORS

2026.2.20 [Fri] - 3.8 [Sun]

We are pleased to present a two-person exhibition features Ishikawa Masumi and Suzuki Hyottoko, who incorporate elements of ukiyo-e depicting sadness and wit with a modern sensibility.
While sharing these commonalities, the two artists’ styles of expression contrast sharply: Ishikawa uses vibrant accents on monochrome tones, depicting individual figures and flames in one-on-one battles and portraits, while Suzuki uses monochrome accents on highly saturated surfaces, depicting groups of people and water in battle scenes and more.
In this exhibition, the entire gallery will be displayed as a single palette of works, each with their own interpretation on the same theme of “color”. We invite you to enjoy the colors embodied in these works and the differences in each artist’s interpretation—and ultimately, the “color” that represent each artist’s individuality.

Ishikawa Masumi

Ishikawa Masumi is a contemporary ukiyo-e painter who advances the classical Japanese woodblock tradition through a distinctly modern perspective. In 2000, he apprenticed under the sixth-generation master Utagawa Toyokuni VI. Following his mentor’s passing, he independently developed a signature style that fuses traditional compositional rigor with contemporary cultural narratives, redefining the relevance of ukiyo-e in the global present.
His official works for Star Wars and collaborations with internationally acclaimed artists including David Bowie, KISS, and Iron Maiden have received wide recognition. Several of his works are held in the collection of the British Museum. Recent projects include a ten-work commissioned series for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, large-scale spatial installations for Hankyu Umeda Main Store, and anniversary collaborations with Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and The Yellow Monkey. His package design for the mineral water brand Kyoto Ukiyoe Water, presented at Expo 2025 Osaka, further expanded his international reach. He continues to undertake international commissions and cross-disciplinary collaborations, positioning ukiyo-e as a dynamic platform for cultural dialogue in contemporary art and global branding.
