Maeda Toshiyuki NEVER.

My work has long been centered on themes of death and contradiction.
For this exhibition, however, I step away, just for a moment, from the idea of endings that I have focused on in my past work, and turn my attention to the everyday life we live now.
Waking up in the morning, brushing my teeth, painting, going to work, riding the train, having a meal with my family, and going to sleep.
We know that these days will eventually come to an end.
Yet as we repeat them without giving them much thought, they gradually become something ordinary and familiar.
Even the preciousness we feel in these moments will, eventually, be something we completely forget.
Someday, when we look back, we may realize that those seemingly ordinary days were filled with happiness.
I wanted to look closely at the things that exist within our everyday lives as they pass by almost unnoticed, and preserve them in my work.

Maeda Toshiyuki

Born in Osaka in 1990 and currently based in Tokyo. Primarily works with acrylic paint to create paintings. At first glance, the works may appear naïve and pop, but they are deeply rooted in the artist’s childhood trauma related to “death.” Each piece reveals glimpses of life and death, as well as the contradictions and struggles inherent in living. Through comical and playful expressions, Maeda continues to explore and transform themes that are often too painful for people to face directly.
